Bethlehem Steel
Founded in 1857 and dissolved in 2003, Bethlehem Steelwas one of the most successful and significant figures of 20th century industries. Notable for its adaptability, diverse offerings and holdings, and numerous contributions to national infrastructure and defense, it was a central facet of America’s Industrial Era, helping to propel it to new heights of prosperity and prominence on the world stage throughout the 20th century. A pioneer in the steel industry, it built the first heavy forging plant in the U.S. in the 1890s, forged the tower of the world’s first ferris wheel for the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893 - the world’s largest single piece of cast iron to date-and produced the first wide-flange structural shapes made in America in the early 20th century, launching the era of the skyscraper. It contributed to the construction of such notable structures as the Golden Gate Bridge, Rockefeller Plaza, and the U.S. Supreme Court Building, while simultaneously playing an integral role in many of America’s military conflicts: fueling the Allied victories in both world wars, as well as America’s victory in the Spanish American War. A leader in the iron, rail, armor plating, weapons and munitions, shipbuilding and large-scale construction steel industries at different times over its nearly 150 years of operation, it reached the heights of success time and again, in their endeavors.
