Slag Sculpture

1988

Retirement gift for fellow steel worker made by Eric Q. at Bethlehem Steel.  Eric, with an artistic eye, saw beauty when he noticed drippings of slag spilled over the side of a “slag car”, a beautiful silvery lava flow over a large hex bolt. He knocked the slag off the bolt to create this striking Dali-esque sculpture. Other found objects from the plant include cogs and a percolator coffee pot top to remind the retiree of the bottomless cups they needed to stay alert and productive. The base is a slice of a rolled steel bar with beveled edge.
